The Leading Logging Contractors in Ontario
The Top 10 Logging Contractors of Ontario are the focus of this month's segment of Logging and Sawmilling Journal's series recognizing some of Canada's leading contractors. The fourth installment follows the publication of lists of top logging contractors in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, published in our September, October and November issues. Not surprisingly, the major players among Ontario's harvesting contractors are located in a northern band running across the province from east to west. Many of the companies are strictly chipping their tree length volumes as they harvest them, feeding the many pulp mills in the province. The trend toward individual companies performing only one of the various aspects of getting the wood to the mill for example, cutting or skidding is becoming more prevalent as we head east. We work hard at Logging and Sawmilling Journal to keep our readers current on the changes taking place in the Canadian forest industry. Our magazine regularly highlights new methods of harvesting being introduced across the country and new equipment in the field on an ongoing basis. As the structure of the harvesting side of the industry continues to evolve, we will continue to keep our readers up to date. The idea to determine the major contractors on the harvesting side of the industry grew out of LSJ's annual feature in our March issue on the country's largest lumber producers. Just as approaches in the forest industry change from region to region, we expect to see changes in these lists as contractors' annual volumes fluctuate from year to year. Other changes have taken place as a result of mill restructurings and industry consolidation. As no records are kept of logging contractors' total annual volumes except by the contractors themselves LSJ has again contacted industry associations, suppliers, mills and the contractors themselves to obtain this information. These lists are based on harvested volumes only and do not involve any other criteria. Once again, for various reasons, some contractors whose companies should appear on this list have requested exclusion from this feature. In view of that, the list is as complete as we can make it. However, we look forward to your feedback. If you have information you think should be included, please contact us. This series has already generated a lot of reader interest so far. We will continue to publish these lists in the next issue or two and look forward to your feedback. Continuing east across the country, our next issue will feature top contractors from Atlantic Canada. Watch for it in an upcoming issue. And remember to check us out on the Web at
