Cormier and EDS Offer RMAP Software
Forest inventory contractors R & B Cormier Inc of Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, in association with the information technology firm EDS Canada, Geomatics Division, have developed a new software system that will substantially reduce the cost of operational forest resource inventories, updates and timber cruising, the company says. The Resource Mapping and Photogrammetry (RMAP) system is a GIS software and hardware interface system that allows trained aerial photo interpreters and technicians to automate and digitize aerial photography and satellite image prints while they are interpreting forest conditions in either stereo or mono. RMAP increases the efficiency and accuracy of forest inventories by having both the photo interpretation and forest cover map automation tasks performed simultaneously by one person.

HeatWave Solves Hemlock Drying Problem
HeatWave's new Q-Sift manufacturing process and Q-Sift Re-Dry Kiln together eliminate wet lumber associated with current hemlock drying processes. Q-Sift substantially reduces product degrade due to over- and under-drying, increases overall grade recovery and annual kiln capacity and reduces conventional drying times, green target size and drying energy costs. The process works by modifying conventional kiln schedules to focus on optimal grade recovery instead of wet reduction. The wet lumber generated is moisture sorted, solid stacked and rapidly re-dried using HeatWave's E-field (energy field) technology. The line of kilns is designed for use with large timbers, hard and softwoods, trim ends and veneers and is volatile organic compound (VOC) emission-free, the company says.
