CONTRACTORS

Leading Logging Contractors of BC

Welcome to our second compilation of British Columbia's leading logging contractors. To say that several things have changed in the forest industry this year would be an understatement. The complications facing contractors who just want to get out there and harvest their wood are many. And with the countervail imposed after the expiration of the softwood lumber agreement with the US, much of the timber that is cut is ending up as stockpiled lumber in mill yards.  The temporary shutdown of many mills, due directly to the countervail, and the ongoing problems in the forest industry have meant less work for some logging companies. Coastal loggers have been hit especially hard. As one coastal logger put it after giving Logging and Sawmilling Journal his harvested volume figures for the year "the question now is are any of us still working ?"

Meanwhile, in the interior, the rush to get out bug infested wood has boosted the harvested volumes of some companies based in areas such as Prince George and Williams Lake.  However, the year was probably typical for amalgamations and for contractors reshaping their companies into two or more entities. In a move to continue to identify the major players on the contracting side, we have combined the harvested volumes of logging operations owned by the same contractor(s), listing the company name most commonly used or the largest of the holdings. Harvested volumes given are for the year or season of 2000.

Although the information for this year's list was easier to obtain, occasionally there were still contractors who, for various reasons, didn't want to be included. So, once again, the lists are as complete as we could make them. If you have information that you think we should include, please get in touch with us.
In future issues of the magazine we will be working on further lists of top logging contractors. Alberta is next. So stay tuned-and don't forget to check us out on the Web at www.forestnet.com
