Silvatech's Opens New BC Facility
International Silvatech Industries Inc recently moved into its new, 36,000-sq-ft custom facility in Langley, BC. The building -housing engineering, fabrication and assembly functions -can contain up to eight different development projects simultaneously. State-of-the-art gantry cranes and other equipment allow aluminum and steel production assembly, while a 350-hp hydraulic test facility ensures quality control is maintained. In production is the SX series of swing boom and parallel arch grapple skidders, featuring SyncroTrack hydrostatic drive with a four-pump system driving four hydraulic wheel motors and providing 100 per cent power to all wheels as needed. An on-board computer adjusts tire speeds for turns, while maintaining constant traction control, the company says. The series includes the 13-foot and 15-foot swing boom grapple skidders-the SX-704 SB and the SX-706 SB-the SX-704 PA and the larger SX-706-PA parallel arch grapple skidders, as well as the SX-706 PM prime mover that delivers more than 300 hp. DynaMotive Technologies Focuses on Biofuels
DynaMotive Technologies Corporation is focussing exclusively on the bioenergy field and the development of BioOil derivative products, following the divestiture of its metal cleaning subsidiary, DynaPower Inc, later this year. The company recently acquired Border Biofuels Ltd in the UK and, along with Canadian Forest Products Ltd, is developing commercial applications for wood waste, turning it into BioOil to power the forest industry. DynaMotive's 10- tonne-per-day plant at the University of BC uses a system called pyrolisis-basically cooking the wood waste at a high temperature and breaking it down into an environmentally sustainable fuel to create power. A commercial demonstration plant, likely near a mill in the P r i n c e George area, will follow up the UBC plant, the company says. Circle Reader Service Card #587

Intelligent NIR Gauges from NDC Infrared
NDC Infrared Engineering offers the latest generation of intelligent near infrared (NIR) gauges, the pre-calibrated MM710 backscatter gauge with ultra high-speed moisture measurement that is 10 times faster than other gauges, the company says, giving more representative sampling while improving accuracy. Dual detector referencing provides long-term gauge stability by eliminating the effects of changes in the source lamp or other system components. The technique has been further refined with a new Lapdog feature that uses beam-splitting technology to ensure its two detectors track each other faithfully. Unlike other gauging systems, it can tolerate changes in lighting, product or ambient temperature and variations in relative humidity. The MM710 requires no routine maintenance. Timberjack's New Drive-to-Tree Feller Bunchers
Timberjack's first rubber-tired feller bunchers, the drive-to-tree 740 and the 840, are purpose-built for firm-surfaced, rolling terrain and, when fitted with flotation tires, can also operate in swampy conditions. With a wheelbase of 104 inches and 110 inches respectively, the 170-hp 740 and the 200- hp 840 offer mobility where frequent moves between sites are necessary and where the stand is sparse, requiring travel between trees. Both models are available with a choice of three continuous high-speed disc saws (from 18 to 22 inches) with an optional shear head attachment with open-centre hydraulics available for the 740. Other features include hydrostatic transmissions, front and rear axle hydraulic differential locks, high-pressure, closed-centre, load-sensing hydraulics, hydraulic tilt cabs and 90-degree steering (stop to stop) with rubber steering stops. Lever steering is also available. Circle Reader Service Card #590

Superior Pulp Chips with CAE's Optichipper
CAE Forestry Systems has developed Optichipper to produce superior wood chips in the manufacture of chemical pulp. Chips produced in field trials had a tighter thickness distribution, contained virtually no overthick classifications and had about half the rejects, while achieving a Kappa reduction of nine points when compared with conventional chips, the company says. The Optichipper targets both chip length and thickness, producing chips much closer to target with an accept rate of over 90 per cent before screening. Circle Reader Service Card #592
