KONE Seeks New Owners for
Partek’s Forest Machines
Following the acquisition of Partek Corporation last year, KONE
Corporation is seeking new owners for Partek’s tractors and forest
machines division, Partek Forest and Valtra. While the search for new
ownership progresses, KONE says it will be business as usual for the
manufacturing, sales and support of the Valmet and Timbco machine lines.
Partek Forest’s position in the global forest machine market is strong and
its brands are set for future growth, through the support of dealers,
customers and other business partners. KONE developed a materials handling
division for the container handling, load handling and tractors and forest
machines business, while divesting itself of other Partek businesses and
holdings. The materials handling division will now concentrate on
container and load handling. Reader Service Card #6058
Hultdins’ New Generation Grapples
Hultdins has introduced a new line of tree length grapples for demanding
knuckle
boom log loader applications. The new generation models feature
heavy-duty robotic weld construction, built-in cylinder rod protection,
wear resistant replaceable arm tips and a high capacity IR12 rotator
capable of withstanding high loads in all directions, the company says.
The TL430 with a 43” opening weighs 1,415 lbs. The TL480 offers a 48”
opening and weighs 1,448 lbs and the TL520 has a 52” opening and weighs
1,536 lbs. Standard grapple features include a 1,000-hr greasing interval,
patented tapered sleeve pin design that eliminates any joint motion and
cushioned cylinders. www.hultdins.com

Vancouver Gets Major Sawmilling Event
Master Promotions Ltd has announced a new sawmilling event for Vancouver,
BC, InterSaw West, scheduled to debut in September 2004. Patterned after
the company’s successful InterSaw/InterScie show in Quebec, InterSaw West
is part of the company’s Forest Industry Trade Show portfolio expansion.
BC and Alberta harvest half of Canada’s total wood volume and produce the
country’s largest volume of solid wood products. Western mills are
recognized as among the most efficient in the world and mill operators
know how important it is to keep up with the latest technology, pointing
out the need for a strong, focused event. Mark Cusack and Jeff Lacey will
handle the day-to-day operations of InterSaw West. A complete show
information package and an early space-booking program will be introduced
in the near future.

Log a Load for Kids Raises $9,600
Log A Load for Kids raised more than $9,600 at the 45th Annual Interior
Logging Association Trades Convention held in Vernon, BC in April. In just
three days, volunteers sold 100 donkey toys donated by Timberjack and
Sunny Bear Pins. They also collected donations from more than 180
exhibitors. Marcels Equipment Ltd made an important collaboration by
donating the use of an excavator for one month—a $10,000 value. It was
auctioned to Sunshine Logging Ltd, the highest bidder. The Log A Load for
Kids program provides an opportunity for forest industry members to help
sick or injured children and truly make a difference in their lives.

Coe’s D*TEC Optimization Improves
Recovery
Coe Vision Systems from Coe Manufacturing have biological defect
recognition and
classification capabilities that are now able to capture
increased value from planermill production by enabling consistent,
repeatable grading decisions. Two other contributors to increased value
realization are minimizing above grade in packages and significantly
increasing recovery of premium grades. Coe Manufacturing recently
installed the new D*TEC5000 GradeScan System at Roseburg Forest Products’
Dillard, Oregon planermill. Coe says preliminary results have produced as
high as 98 per cent accuracy and a major increase in recovery of their
upper grades. www.coemfg.com

BGR Develops Expansion Slotted
Saw
BGR Saws has introduced its Expansion Slotted Saw design across Canada and
the US, with all mills achieving positive results and a dramatic reduction
of deviation, the company says. The heat build-up on blades at high linear
saw speeds—which causes the saw plate to expand and deviation to occur—is
reduced by an increased number of teeth in the saws, which also achieve a
smoother finished product. The expansion slots in the saw blade also
absorb heat, further reducing deviation and tension loss. The blades are
easier to maintain, have a longer life expectancy and stay flat, as they
no longer need as much tension, the company says.

Tigercat’s Six-Wheel 640 Hauler
Tigercat’s new multi-purpose, off-road utility vehicle, the six-wheel 640
hauler, is
based on the C640 clambunk. Tigercat has lengthened the rear
chassis of the C640 clambunk skidder to accommodate a variety of off-road
hauling applications. The first 640 hauler is equipped with a hydraulic
dumper and serves as an off-road articulating dump truck. The six-wheel
bogie design and long wheelbase offer many advantages, the company says,
including low ground pressure, a smooth ride and excellent traction.
Hydrostatically driven for ease of operation and high performance in
challenging terrain, the 640 hauler also has potential for fertilizer,
manure or herbicide spreader applications.

Caterpillar’s New Logging Grapples
Four new logging grapples from Caterpillar comprise the GL-Series for Cat
forest machines. The new grapples feature 360-degree rotation and wide jaw
openings of 52”, 55” and 60”—the GL 52, GL 55 and the GL60. The GL 60 is
available in either a bunching or sorting configuration. Built for
endurance in high-volume logging applications, the grapples are designed
to handle large bunches of stems or single, large logs. The interlocking
tines close down to 5” for picking and sorting. Other features include
optimized leg design, high torque motor, heavy-duty rotate bearing and
recessing pins. Caterpillar grapples are designed and built to match the
performance and operational characteristics of Cat forest machines.

Hyster’s Pneumatic Lift Truck
Offers 28,000-lb Capacity
The new H280HD pneumatic lift truck from Hyster Company provides a
28,000-lb lift capacity for heavy duty lifting in adverse outdoor
applications such as lumber yards. A one-piece cast axle frame provides
unmatched strength, the company
says, with fixed-length, non-adjustable
tie rods that ensure steer tire alignment and optimum tire life. A tapered
roller bearing mounting for spindle/king pins supports the vertical
loading of counterweight and steering direction rotations. Spring-applied,
air-released brakes are standard, with a parking brake integral to the
braking system for “full lock down” capabilities. Other features include
streamlined mechanics, a balanced hydrostatic power steering cylinder that
provides equal bi-directional steering, and pilot centred wheels that fit
over the steer wheel hubs and planetary hub to support the wheel load. DIN
nut wheel-attaching hardware with integral washers eliminates the need for
wheel alignment torquing and provides quick access to service.
