CAE Sells Its Two Forestry
Businesses
CAE has sold its sawmill operations, CAE McGehee and CAE Newnes, to Coe
Manufacturing Company. Both operations are part of CAE's forestry business
of which the company has been intending to divest itself. "Coe's
experience in this area and its managerial strengths will assure a smooth
transition and continued growth of Newnes/McGehee," stated CAE's
executive vice-president and CFO Paul G Renaud in a recent press release.
"We are extremely enthusiastic about the opportunities to leverage
the strengths of both Newnes/McGehee and Coe," said Darryl Dillenback,
chief executive officer of Coe. "We look forward to improving the two
businesses and continuing the product innovation and high level of service
that the firm has provided in the past." Coe, of Painesville, Ohio,
is celebrating its 150th anniversary and is an independently owned major
international machinery systems and solutions provider to the veneer,
lumber, panelboard, mineralboard, rubber and laminates industries. It
operates three manufacturing facilities in North American with 500
employees. Newnes/McGehee operates out of Salmon Arm, BC, Ukiah,
California and Covington, Georgia. It employs more than 400 people and
provides machinery, equipment and software for analyzing, measuring,
cutting and sorting lumber to both sawmills and lumber producers. CAE
announced its intention to divest its forestry operations last December in
order to focus on its core business of providing advanced simulation and
integrated training solutions for customers in civil aviation, military
and marine markets. CAE's Renaud said the company is on track with its
plans to divest its forestry operations. Once the sale of the Newnes/McGehee
operations is completed, CAE will have one remaining forestry entity, its
oriented strand board operation in Vancouver, BC. Earlier this year, CAE
sold its fibre screening business. Reader Service Card #970
Steel-Tracked Firetracker Fire
Suppression Vehicle
The Firetracker fire suppression vehicle from Kootenay Tractor/KMC is a
remanufactured FMC/KMC tracked skidder modified to carry a 1,330-gallon
steel tank with an integrated 26-gallon foam retardant tank. Its two
gasoline-powered pumps include a high pressure WildFire pump capable of
pressures up to 200 psi and a volume pump capable of tank loading in five
minutes at 264 gpm. The water/foam discharge system incorporates a 200',
1" high-pressure fire hose. Powered by a 200-hp Detroit Diesel
engine, the unit has a Clark 28000 series powershift transmission with an
integrated torque converter and is capable of attaining speeds of up to 15
mph. Balanced weight distribution, torsion bar suspension and rubber
bushed "live" steel tracks enable the Firetracker to work in
boggy areas or steep terrain in slopes up to 60 per cent. Its low centre
of gravity enables it to contour slopes up to 40 per cent, the company
says. A front-mounted, six-way hydraulic angle/tilt brush blade is capable
of moving burning or smoldering objects. Reader Service Card #971
Hultdins New ECO-Wheel Tracks
Based on the smooth running Olofsfors ECO-Track cross member, Hultdins'
new ECO-Wheel Tracks for skidders have many advantages over
chains, the company says. Increased contact area of the wider footprint
lowers ground pressure and improves flotation and the cross-member design
increases traction, with more pulling power in wet or rough conditions
with less ground disturbance. ECO-Wheel Tracks extend tire life and reduce
tire replacement by as much as one set per season, while providing greater
manoeuvrability and stability. The tracks are self-cleaning, easily
adjustable, last two to three times longer than chains, are easier to
install and require less maintenance. They are available to fit tire sizes
23.1x26, 24.5x32, 28Lx26 and 30.5x32. Reader Service Card #972
New Holland Adds Articulated Dump
Truck Line
The six-wheel drive AD250 is the first in a new line of articulated dump
trucks from New Holland Construction. The centre-pin oscillation
mechanism and ground-following rear tandem maintain stability, while the
inter-axle differential locking system extricates the vehicle from soft
ground. Like all articulated dump trucks, the AD250 has an articulation
and oscillation joint between the cab and body to allow the front of the
truck to move independently of the body, making it agile with a tight
turning radius. The truck hauls 13.9 cubic yards (SAE struck load) or 17.4
cubic yards (heap load). Other features include a spacious,
operator-friendly cab, fully hydraulic power steering, an automatic
six-speed transmission with manual override standard, a Cummins 6CTA
turbo-charged diesel engine and independent front and rear braking
systems. Reader Service Card #973
Timberstar Makes House Logs from Bug
Wood
A new line of equipment designed to produce machined house logs out
of bug wood or green wood is now available from Timberstar. The low-cost
system produces quality logs out of typical firewood grade dry lumber
speedily and with low production costs, the company says. Two different
styles of the mills are available and produce from 8" to 18"
diameter dowels at an average production speed of 15 feet per minute.

Bandit's 24" Whole Tree
Chipper
Bandit Industries Inc has added a 24"-diameter capacity whole tree chipper
model to its line. The Model 2400 Tree Bandit has a powerful feed system
and produces 100 tons of chips per hour, depending on the quality and size
of material being processed. The hydraulic five-wheel feed system consists
of two horizontal and two vertical wheels with an added top wheel set on
the diagonal that nearly doubles the feed wheel surface area coming in
contact with the wood. A 220-degree hydraulic swivel discharge spout
allows the operator to aim chips in any direction and fill chip vans
around the unit. Other features include a roomy operator's cab, joystick
controls and a powerful backhoe style loader with continuous rotation
grapple. Available with or without a loader, the unit has an optional dirt
separator, a 5 1/2' infeed conveyor and a choice of a 650 Cummins or
Caterpillar diesel engine. Reader Service Card #978
Timber Loaders and Road Builders from
Link-Belt
Two new models of Link-Belt timber loaders and road builders were
introduced recently by LBX Company LLC. The 210LX and the 240LX
incorporate all the technology and operator friendly controls developed
for the Link-Belt LX series excavators, including heavy-duty upper frames
that are purpose-built with reinforcement for forestry applications and
purpose-built lowers from the next larger machine class. Larger turntable
bearings for lift capability and longer service life and an oversized
swing system with the next larger size of swing components are other
features. Both models are powered by electronically controlled, Tier
II-compliant Isuzu engines that provide quiet, fuel-efficient operation.
Other features include larger operator stations and the Inte-LX computer
control system, which monitors output and pressures while regulating
engine performance. Reader Service Card #979
