Blount Purchases Windsor Forestry Tools
Blount International Inc has signed an agreement to purchase the assets of Windsor Forestry Tools Inc of Milan, Tennessee. Windsor, which had sales of approximately $17 million for the 12 months ended June 30, 2000, manufactures cutting chain and guide bars for chain saws and commercial timber harvesting equipment. The company, which has a 60,000 square foot manufacturing facility, will become part of Blount's Outdoor Products Group. With products sold in more than 50 countries, over 75 per cent of Windsor's sales are outside the US. Blount, based in Montgomery, Alabama, intends to maintain the Milan operations and market the products under the Windsor name. Circle Reader Service Card #605

Tireboss System Offers Control from Cab
The Tireboss tire pressure control systems, from TPC International, electronically control tire pressures from the cab of the truck while the vehicle is moving. Each system can be programmed to suit vehicle configuration and specific haul cycle requirements and comes standard with built-in safety systems and continuous tire pressure monitoring. Tireboss allows the operator to match appropriate tire pressures to the vehicle load, speed and road conditions, avoiding over inflation, the major cause of road, tire and vehicle damage. It also ensures balanced tire pressure on dual tires, avoiding unequal load sharing caused by road crowning and preventing increased stress and irregular tire wear. Circle Reader Service Card #606

Sturdy Kronos Forest Trailer
The Kronos 140 4WDM forest trailer features a sturdy set of bogie axles operating fully on mechanical transmission, with the force generated by the drive shaft being transmitted via the drive gear and the differential gear system to the bogie housings on both sides of the machine. From the bogie housings, power is transmitted via several gears to the hub of each wheel of the trailer. The final build up in torque takes place in the hubs, by means of planetary gears, which transmit the traction. There is no chain transmission or elastic or disc clutch inside the bogies. A differential gear lock enables all four wheels to pull with the same speed. Other features include multiple disc brakes and an overload clutch to deal with inadvertent overloading. GB American Improves ProTop
GB American Inc, a division of Australian cutting systems specialists Griffiths and Beerens (GB), recently announced improvements to the ProTop line of replaceable sprocket nose guide bars. The ProTop chain saw bar is crafted from solid, high carbon steel and is attached by a unique self-locking design with three high tensile rivets. GB engineers used titanium alloy harvester bar steel as the new side plate material for ProTop noses, offering excellent wear resistance. The new .404inch pitch nose contains an actual 11tooth harvester bar sprocket with thicker gullets, broader teeth and smoother chain transport characteristics. The step up to 11 from 10 teeth has increased the radius of the noses and the bar body has been widened accordingly. The nose sprockets are supported by Swiss bearings. The groove is precision ground, not milled, and rails are hardened in a four step heat treating process. GB American offers a broad guide bar range, with replaceable nose bars from 15 to 36 inches; extra long bars and double ended mill bars to 84 inches; titanium alloy carving bars; harvester bars for all .404 inch and 3/4inch pitch applications; plus a full range of drive sprockets for chain saws and harvesters. NovaJack/Bombardier Join Forces
Bombardier Recreational Products, ATV division, and NovaJack, a subsidiary of Denharco Inc, have concluded a co branding agreement to sell the NovaJack product line in the ATV dealerships of Bombardier Recreational Products. The move creates the largest North American network of forestry tools, the company says, and will allow private woodlot owners fast and easy access to the entire forestry tool line offered under the NovaJack banner. The NovaJack product line consists of forestry trailers, skidding arches, skidding cones and a variety of logging accessories designed for sustainable woodland development. Peterson Sawmills Offers Larger Alternative
Peterson Sawmills, manufacturers of portable production frame sawmills, offers its new 10inch production mill for larger dimensions, complementing the company's six and eight inch models. The saws have tungsten carbide teeth that can be sharpened by the operator without removing the blade from the machine. With the company's HiLo model, sawdust is discharged under the Hi Track preventing build up on the track. The centre support can be easily removed so logs can be rolled under the Hi Track and into the cutting position. Placing the track on the high side is an advantage when cutting large diameter logs, as the side forces are transferred to the high track rather than through the mill frame, giving more stability and greater accuracy, the company says. The down side is the support system gets in the way of the parallel flow of the logs, slabs and lumber through the mill. Designed for single operators or a team of two, the Peterson mill's entire frame is pulled along the tracks to produce a cut. The tracks remain in a fixed location, while the centre unit is raised and lowered within the frame via a hand wheel or optional power lift. Set up can be around the log or at a fixed site. Metriguard Tester Improvements Speed Production
Metriguard Inc has significantly improved and refined the temperature compensation in its series 2650, 2700 and 2800 veneer testers. The upgrades improve accuracy and provide consistent results regardless of the veneer dryer temperature, improving control of laminated veneer lumber properties and recovery of material, the company says. Metriguard has also devised a way to allow short length veneer testing, without complex reconfigurations. With this option, converting to running short length veneer is now simplified, speeding production and reducing downtime. Anew higher speed processor option with an improved user interface allows users to test veneer on the line more quickly. Used in the production of veneer and laminated veneer lumber, the grading machines measure density, modulus of elasticity and moisture content, in addition to ultrasonic velocity and sheet width. The acquisition expands new and existing markets throughout the Americas, the company says, by consolidating distribution in the Seattle area while establishing the company in Alaska. Besco Inc, established in 1944, has locations in Seattle and Anchorage and Fairbanks, Alaska. Circle Reader Service Card #613

Tassu Seedling Collars Offer Protection
Tassu seedling collars from Finland provide nontoxic, environmentally safe and inexpensive protection for young trees. The decayable collars are manufactured of recycled paper and can be impregnated with natural repellents and micronutrients. They protect the seedling against grass and other competing ground cover, reduce competition for root space and damage from rodents and allow the seedling to obtain more light. The channels on the collars collect water, offering humidity and temperature control. The collar offers protection for the first few years, after which it decays. Circle Reader Service Card #616
